3 Quick & Easy Ways How to Remove Polygel Nails at Home

Polygel Nails are one of the best recent innovations in the nail industry. They look amazing and they are exceptionally durable and very easy to work with.

Now what a lot of people don’t know is that Polygel Nails are easier and quicker to take off when compared to acrylic nails and gel extensions. But this is only if you use the right method to remove it

1- How to Remove Polygel Without Acetone Using Oil & Soap

Repeatedly using acetone or a nail drill to remove your manicure can be extremely damaging to your natural nails.

Now thankfully by using a combination of oil, soap, and water you can remove your Polygel Nails without having to use a nail drill or acetone.

I usually recommend this method if your manicure is old and worn out, if not I recommend filing them off.

Ingredients & Tools:

  1. Oil – Any type of oil would work – from cooking oil to baby oil
  2. Detergent or Body Wash
  3. Very Warm Water
  4. Cuticle Pusher – or something flat to go under the nail.

Method:

  1. The first thing you are gonna need to do is use your cuticle pusher to gently raise or lift the edges of your polygel nails up.
  2. You see raising the edges allows for the oil and water mixture to seep underneath the nails.
  3. Next, proceed to mix your oil and detergent with very warm water.
  4. Then, you need to soak your nails into the mixture for 15 minutes.
  5. Finally, once your nails have soaked, use your cuticle pusher to gently lift the edges of your nails to remove them.
  6. Now if your nails are still stubborn you can soak them again for another couple of minutes.
  7. You can see how it’s done in the video below.

2- How to Quickly Take Off Polygel With a Nail Dril

Using a nail drill is the quickest way to remove your Polygel Nails. But it can be extremely intimidating to use, especially for a beginner.

So that’s why I am gonna outline step by step how you can easily and use an electric nail drill to remove your Polygel Nails.

  1. The first thing, that you need to do is to trim off any excess length on your nails.
  2. Next, you need to push back your cuticles – this is to prevent the nail drill from damaging them.
  3. Now what I recommend that you do is use a softer and smoother sanding band to gently file the edges of your polygel nails.
  4. Once you have filed the edges of your nails, you can use a harsher and more coarse sanding band to gently file away the bulk of your polygel.
  5. You will need to file as close as possible to your natural nails without touching them.
  6. Next, wash away all the dust on your nails.
  7. And then you need to use a low grit nail file to manually take off the rest of the polygel.
  8. Finally, apply ample amounts of cuticle oil to rehydrate your nails.

3- How to Remove Polygel without a Nail Drill Using Acetone

Using acetone is the most common Polygel removal method but a lot of people do it wrong. So I am gonna walk you through how to correctly and safely use acetone to remove your Polygel nails.

  1. The first thing that you need to do is trim off any excess length or extension on your nails – this makes your nails easier to work with.
  2. Next rub petroleum jelly around your nail’s cuticle area – if you don’t have petroleum jelly you can also use cuticle oil.
  3. Then you need to file away the top coat part of your polygel nails.
  4. For filing, you need to use a low grit nail file
  5. Next, soak small pieces of cotton pads or cotton balls in acetone.
  6. Then wrap the acetone-soaked cotton on the nails using foil wrap or you can use soak-off nail clips to hold the cotton pad onto the nails.
  7. Let the nails soak for 20 minutes.
  8. Finally, once the nails have soaked use a cuticle pusher to scrap away the Polygel.
  9. You can see how it’s done in the video below

Now even though acetone can be damaging to your nails there are a few things you can do to make it safer. Such as:

  • Apply Petroleum Jelly around your cuticle area before soaking – You see the petroleum jelly acts as a buffer protecting your skin from getting directly exposed to the acetone.
  • Use a low grit nail file to file away the hard gel top coat – removing the top coat makes it easier for the acetone to penetrate the Polygel to soften it up.
  • Moisturize your nails and cuticles after removing your nails – Acetone severely dehydrates your cuticles and nails which is why you should apply cuticle oil after the removal process to rehydrate them.
